It takes dozens of dedicated volunteers’ months to organize the flight.  On the day Qantas pilots, cabin crew and ground staff donate their time; side-by-side with Qantas Pathfinders and Rotary Club of Turramurra volunteers.

The day would not be possible without Qantas Airways Limited assisting with the aircraft, Shell supplying aviation fuel, whilst fees for airport facilities and landing fees are waived by Sydney Airport Corporation Limited.

This year Hyundai Help for Kids are boarding the flight for the first time; providing entertainment for all the kids on the day as well as sponsoring seats on the aircraft for 40 children from the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC), Australia’s largest non-government provider of education and services to children with vision or hearing loss.. Pre-flight they’ll have the helping hands of their friends Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog and Fairies Clare & Larissa at Sydney International Terminal to keep them amused, then during the joy flight a team of Clown Doctors will be treating patients with a big dose of fun and laughs.

The organizations who participate include Giant Steps, Family & Community Services, York Public School, Shine for Kids, Royal Far West, Barnardos Find a Family, St Lucy’s, Taldumande Youth Services, Cure our Kids, On Fire, The Hills School, Muscular Dystrophy, Stewart House, Leukemia Foundation, Youth off the Streets, Tallowood School, Beverley Park Special School, Heart Kids, and Bear Cottage.

Qantas Pathfinders is a fundraising auxiliary within Qantas founded in 1967 and they raise funds solely for RIDBC.  The annual Jumbo Joy Flight is a highlight for all involved.  Each year the excitement, laughter, and smiles from the children and their families is tremendous and keeps all the volunteers coming back time and time again.

Over the years the Rotary Club of Turramurra has been able to provide this wonderful event with the support of McDonalds as well as Customs and SNP at the airport. Whilst the Rotary Club of Turramurra is an extremely active club providing money and manpower for many causes both locally and internationally, the Jumbo Joy Flight has always been one of their most important events.
